Who We Hire to Make AI Actually Work Inside Health Systems

Why Engineers Choose Luminai

Luminai is building the AI platform for health system operations: turning the complex, high-stakes work behind care delivery into software that works in production.

That problem is harder than it sounds. Health systems run on messy inputs, institution-specific rules and human-intensive workflows where small mistakes can delay care or create risk.

Every day, health systems make thousands of operational decisions: which department a referral should be routed to, which slot a patient should be scheduled into, whether prior authorization is required, and whether a treatment is likely to be reimbursable. The logic behind those decisions is rarely captured in one place. Some lives in SOPs. Some lives in Epic configuration, PDFs, spreadsheets, payer contracts, and years of supervisor experience.

Our job is to build software that learns how each institution operates, validates that understanding with the people who own the workflow and carries work through to completion in a way that builds trust over time.

The stakes are high. Health systems are under more financial pressure than ever. Clinicians are overloaded and administrative burden keeps growing. Every workflow we fix gives time back to care teams and helps patients get the care they need faster.

For the right engineer, Luminai offers a rare combination:

  • Applied AI with real healthcare outcomes. We build systems that move work forward, learn from the way each institution operates and create measurable value for health systems and patients.
  • High-stakes customers, real constraints. We work with major health systems, which means the product has to be reliable, secure and operationally durable.
  • One tight feedback loop. Model behavior, product design, deployment, and customer impact are not separate worlds. What you build gets used, tested and sharpened quickly.
  • Early enough to matter. The architecture, the culture and the category are still being decided. Engineers here do not just inherit the platform; they help shape it.

The Kind of Engineer Who Thrives Here

We keep the team small and the bar high because this kind of work requires an exceptional level of ownership.

The people who succeed here thrive in ambiguity. They do not need the problem perfectly scoped before they start. They wear multiple hats, pull context from customers and teammates, make a plan from incomplete information and keep pushing until the work becomes something real.

They care less about whether a task fits their job description and more about whether the important thing is getting done. They care whether it works in a hospital on a bad day, not just whether it passed review. And they can zoom into the details when quality matters, then zoom out and ask whether we are solving the right problem at all.

We value people with spikes. You do not need to be excellent at everything, but you should be unusually strong at something that matters: systems architecture, product taste, ML intuition, customer discovery, security, infrastructure, design, or turning ambiguity into shipped work.

Luminai is not for everyone. You will not always be handed a clear execution plan. You’ll need to choose the best path forward from many imperfect options, stay close to users when things go wrong and move quickly without lowering the reliability bar.

We do not require a healthcare background. But we do expect curiosity, systems thinking and the ability to learn unfamiliar workflows quickly enough to build software that works.

How We Work

A few patterns show up again and again:

  • Find the real problem. A customer may ask for automation, but the better answer might be adding missing context, redesigning the workflow or deciding that a different process should exist altogether.
  • Make the messy parts legible. We take ambiguous workflows and make them concrete: the right inputs, the decision logic, the feedback loops and where human judgment needs to stay involved.
  • Move fast with judgment. Healthcare does not reward recklessness. It also does not reward endless process. Security, compliance, PHI, integrations, and production behavior deserve real discipline but many decisions can and should happen quickly.
  • Turn one-off work into leverage. Every deployment should teach the platform something. Every repeated pattern should become easier the next time.

At a more traditional company, these might be separate jobs. Here, they are often part of the same loop.

Our Company Commandments

We are building Luminai around a small set of operating principles:

  • Make Excellence a Habit. Stack it relentlessly.
  • Chase Truth. Ask the hard questions early, especially when silence would be easier.
  • Drop the Armor. Lead with vulnerability and learn in public.
  • Deliver Value Today. Progress delayed is care delayed.
  • Seek What Matters. Find important problems, pursue promising ideas, and own the outcome.

These principles matter because the work sits at the intersection of high technical complexity and high institutional stakes. We need people who combine ambition with humility, urgency with precision, and ownership with deep customer empathy.

Who You'll Work With

Talent density is not an abstraction here. The team includes former founders, forward deployed engineers from companies like Palantir and Ramp, experienced engineers who were early at companies like Docker and Coinbase, open source maintainers and people who have spent years building mission-critical systems in defense, fintech, infrastructure, and healthcare.

To show what that looks like day to day, we are starting a series spotlighting the engineers building Luminai. Look out for more “Inside Luminai Engineering” posts on our site.
